Needs assessment and mapping of schools in selected districts in Somalia

1. Application of GIS in a School Mapping Exercise

On behalf of the Ministry of Education, as part of the World Bank's Social Human Capital Development project, HPRD conducted a comprehensive school needs assessment covering 13 districts spanning the five Federal Member States (FMS) of Somalia.

The GIS application was utilised to pinpoint the precise locations of schools, as illustrated in the accompanying figure. Furthermore, comprehensive school-level data was meticulously gathered and analysed to assess the status of education provision within each district.

Buffer analysis was conducted whose goal was to utilise data on gaps in education provision and identify potential new school locations based on population and distances from existing schools.
