Research On Impact Of Covid-19 On The Nutrition Situation In Somalia And Somaliland

The study was conducted to understand the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the nutrition situation in Somalia. The overall study objective was to conduct an in-depth analysis of malnutrition drivers in Somalia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and assess the impact of the pandemic on the nutrition situation in the country.

The study was conducted to understand the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the nutrition situation in Somalia. The overall study objective was to conduct an in-depth analysis of malnutrition drivers in Somalia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and assess the impact of the pandemic on the nutrition situation in the country. The study applied a UNICEF conceptual framework approach of the determinants of child undernutrition that focus on the key immediate drivers, underlying, and basic determinants of malnutrition. The study methodology was premised on access, review, synthesis and analysis of existing health and nutrition related data collected by active humanitarian partners at pre-COVID 19 and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Somalia.

Implementation

HPRD undertook the study under supervision of Scaling-Up- Nutrition (SUN) Focal Person, Office of Prime Minister (OPM), Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), UNOPS Programme Management Support Specialist, Somalia Country Office (SOCO). A targeted nutrition actor mapping was undertaken to identify humanitarian partners for key informant interviews which were done across Somalia. The aim of the study was to gather context-specific evidence to inform policy and strategic recommendations which can be used to strengthen and or inform the on going and future interventions. The action research on the root causes of malnutrition in Somalia is fundamental in providing concrete recommendations to inform policymakers, donors, and implementing partners’ decisions in ensuring appropriate and efficient allocation of resources and subsequently, greater outcomes towards expanding quality nutrition services.
