Somalia Livestock Market Assessment
The Livestock market assessment a De-Risking, Inclusion, and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies (DRIVE) Project is designed to address the critical challenges faced by pastoralists in the Horn of Africa (HoA), particularly in Somalia.
This assessment is intended to;
Evaluate the dynamics of local and export livestock markets, analysing historical trends, seasonal variations, and future growth projections.
Map out key livestock value chains and assess the strengths, weaknesses, costs, and profitability of different actors along them.
Identify structural constraints, inefficiencies, and gaps within livestock value chains limiting the sector's competitiveness and scalability.
Benchmark productivity and costs of Somali livestock enterprises against competitors in export markets to determine competitiveness.
Assess the capabilities and capacity of livestock enterprises to meet regulatory standards and buyer requirements in target export markets.
Analyse the political, policy, and infrastructural factors impacting the performance and growth of the livestock sector.
Understand the needs, preferences, and purchasing criteria of importers/consumers of Somali livestock and livestock products across target markets.
Determine the demand trends, future projections, and market potential for Somali livestock products across regional and global markets.
Identify niche livestock market segments where Somalia has a competitive advantage to focus development efforts and investments.
Appraise the opportunities for diversification and value addition within livestock value chains in Somalia.
Assess the opportunities with the new markets including EAC, AcFTA and access to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Prepare what is needed to enter into these markets and comply with the standards, marketing, etc.
Provide tailor-made, actionable recommendations to enhance livestock sector productivity, commercialisation, and market access.
Establish a baseline for monitoring and evaluating progress in transforming livestock value chains within the country
The assessment covered the six federal member states of Somalia: -Jubbaland, Southwest State, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Puntland, and Somaliland.
